"Whatever Is True" is based on Philippians 4:8-9. Functionally, it makes a great benediction song, sending the congregation out into the world with a reminder to set their minds on truth, kindness, and noble things, and to remember that we are all held with love. The line, "love for a stranger, love for a neighbor, seeking the Christ" is also a powerful text to sing in light of the current crises of immigrants at the southern U.S. borders and the recent heartbreaking reality of refugees from Afghanistan. This song was written to go with the "Day 3" Scriptures and Themes of the 2018 "Beyond Belief" Outdoor Ministries Camp curriculum published by Chalice Press. The theme for the day is "What If We Hope?," and the Scripture is the story of a man's friends bringing a sick friend to Jesus for healing and cutting a hole in the roof in order to get through the crowd." This is a song of longing for "Green hearts" and gardens that need to be planted. This brand new song by gifted composer and musicologist Mark Miller was written just before Mark underwent surgery to remove a tumor on his brain.  He was told that the surgery could wind up leaving him deaf, especially in one ear--no small matter for anyone--but especially huge for one who is called to teach and create and perform music.  Thankfully, the surgery went well, the tumor was benign, and Mark hears perfectly.  And we all received the gift of this beautiful song in and through the process!  This one will minister deeply to anyone facing uncertainty and risk and who needs to be reminded that God and the community of faith will always "surround us with love."

If and when Mark does a more produced version of this song in the studio we will make that available, but for now this simple demo is the only recording of this brand new song that exists.  Thanks so much for sharing it with us Mark, and we have a feeling this song is going to be widely used!

Ben Johnson leads a lot of the music at Solomon's Porch Church in the Twin Cities.  Ben says that often he will sing a song that the gathered community will listen to, and then sing along either with a refrain or just as they learn the song after repeated hearings over time. 

This beautiful composition of Ben's is a great example of a song that is both singer/songwriter in the verses and then community song in the refrain and ending.  We look forward to making more of Ben's music available as well as to interviewing him (for our blog and Facebook posts) in order to learn how Solomon's Porch uses music in the context of worship.

This song was written specifically for Maundy Thursday, the last night of Jesus's life, and yet it is useful for any time people feel "up against it." One of the Gospels says that after the Last Supper and the foot washing, and after Judas left the table to betray him, Jesus and his disciples sang a hymn together before they left for the garden of Gethsemane. A song that would give Jesus strength to face what he knew the next day was going to mean for him. This is a very singable and easy to learn chorus by Troy Hatfield, one of the musical leaders of Mars Hill Church in Grand Rapids, MI.  The lyric is a beautiful reminder of Psalm 46:12 which tell us that because God is with us--especially in the midst of trouble--we do not need to be afraid. 

Fear--it's being thrown at us and sold to us and used to manipuate and control folks in so many ways.  We all have our own personal fears as well.  We hope and pray that little choruses like this will help us respond to fear with Spirit-centered love and strength and freedom.
